Setting up for a Positive Mom Bathing with Baby Experience
Bathing with baby is one of my favorite things. But it can be difficult to find the time to do it. This article will walk you through the set up you need to make the most of the time.
Why bath with baby?
Baths are a great time to spend bonding with a newborn. When they are little, they are so small and fragile. You can hold them close and wash them with care.
Baths are also a great tool for early development. They help little ones develop essential skills, such as independence and motor skills.
It’s also a great time to sing to a baby and make a truly special bond.
Let's go through the steps you can take to set yourself up for success.
Bathing with Your Baby - Preparation is Key
When it comes to avoiding awkward situations and minimizing your baby's exposure to dangerous situations, preparation is key.
At the Best Baby Care Tips, we always encourage parents to consider your baby's health and safety as number one priority. With this in mind we have put together a checklist of steps to take before you get into the bath tub with your bubs.
Warm the Room - ensure you turn the heater on for the room that you will be bathing with baby. Heating the room well in advance of the actual bath time makes sure the little one is comfortable when getting in and out of the bath.
Gather all the essential items for the bath - give some thought to the activities that you and your baby will be participating in during bath time and gather each item ahead of time and place it within arms reach of the bath. The last thing you want to do is have to reach for items and putting you or the little one in a precarious situation.
Other Support - Have someone available in the house who is available should you need them in an emergency. For us, this is a must-have item on our checklist. It is important to have the ability to act quickly in the event of an emergency. It is also helpful to have someone available to attend to other things that may crop up while you are in the bath, such as the telephone ringing or a knock on the door.
Timing is Everything - finding the right time for bathing with your baby is key when setting up for a positive experience. For some babies, bath time can be a soothing and calming experience. If you find the experience relaxes your baby, having bath time included in your sleep time routine could work wonders for both your sleep cycles.
Top Tips for Bathing with Your Baby
Never leave your baby in the bath - we cannot emphasize this point enough - NEVER leave your baby in the bath by themselves. Even just for a moment. The smallest amount of water can be dangerous to an infant that has no neck control or motor skills to help them maneuver to a safe position.
Set music to create ambience - using music not only creates a beautiful environment for you and bubs to enjoy and play with water. It also helps to stimulate and develop your baby's auditory senses.
Be prepared to End Bath Time Early - as you are most likely aware, babies are unpredictable. Even if you had a successful bath time last week, doesn't mean the next one is going to be the same. Be prepared to end the session early. Especially if your baby has an accident and soils the water or begins to cry uncontrollably.
